What Happens During Your Hair System Fitting in London

A first hair system fitting can feel like a big step, so here is exactly what will happen, from the moment you walk in to the moment you look in the mirror. Everything is done in one private visit, with one named specialist looking after you the whole time. You never have to rush, and you never have to decide anything on the spot. Come with your hair at its normal length and bring a photo of a hairstyle you like, and we will take it from there.

01

Consultation & assessment

We look at your hair loss, the hair you have left and your daily routine, and you tell us how you want to look. This is the best time to ask questions, such as which base suits your skin, how often you will need a refit and what each visit costs. The consultation is free, and if a hair system is not right for you, we will tell you honestly.

02

Choosing your system

Together we choose the base, the hair type, the length, the thickness and the hairline, based on how you live. Some men want the whole top of the head covered. Others only want to fill in the hairline or the crown. Either way, you see and understand every choice before anything is made.

03

Colour & density match

Your system is matched to your own hair colour, including any grey, and to your wave pattern and how thick your hair is at the front and the crown. We do this in natural light so the colour looks right outside, not just in the studio. The aim is a system that blends in with your hair and does not sit on top of it.

04

Preparation and Attachment

We clean and prepare your scalp, then attach the system firmly with the method that suits your skin and your routine, either double sided tape or a liquid bond. Nothing goes under the skin, and the system is attached to the surface of your scalp only.

05

Cut, blend & style

Our trained barbers cut the system together with your own hair and blend the two until you cannot see where one ends and the other begins. We check the hairline from the front, from the side and up close, so it looks natural in real life and not only in a mirror.

06

Aftercare walkthrough

We show you how to wash, dry, style and sleep in your system, which products to use and which ones to avoid. You also get a clear plan for your next visit, and your first maintenance appointment is booked before you leave, so you always know what comes next.

Lace, Skin and Monofilament Bases for Your Hair System Fitting

The base is the thin layer that sits on your scalp and holds the hair, and it changes how natural the hairline looks, how the system feels and how often it needs care. We do not give you an off the shelf system. The base and the hair are chosen for your hair loss, your skin and your daily life. If you want to read more before you visit, our guide to the different types of hair replacement systems explains each base in detail.

Lace

Soft, realistic front

Lace is light and breathable, and it gives a very natural hairline because the front edge is almost invisible. It is the most delicate of the three bases, so it suits men who are happy to come in for regular maintenance and want the most natural look at the front.

Skin

Scalp-like finish

Skin is a thin polyurethane base that lies flat and looks like a real scalp, with the hair set in a natural growth direction. It is easy to clean and copes better with sweat and moisture, which makes it a good everyday choice for men who are active or work in warm places.

Mono

The all-rounder

Mono is short for monofilament. It is a fine, breathable base with a natural looking parting and good strength. It is a popular choice for men with a sensitive scalp, and for anyone who wants a system that needs less upkeep.

Hair quality: only European and Indian Remy hair, never lower grade alternatives. Not sure which base is right for you? That is exactly what the free consultation is for, and your specialist will show you the options on your own head before anything is made.

How Long Does a Hair System Fitting Take?

A first fitting and a refit are two different appointments, and each one takes a different amount of time. A first fitting is longer, because we choose the system, match the colour and fit it all in one visit. A refit is shorter, because the system is already made and only needs to be taken off, cleaned and put back on. Eat something before your first fitting and avoid booking it between meetings, so you can relax and leave without rushing.

First Fitting

2 – 3 hours

Your first visit covers the consultation, choosing the system, colour matching, scalp preparation, full fitting, cutting, styling and your aftercare talk. Same day fitting is available for suitable systems, which means you walk out with a finished result and not a half done one.

Refit Appointment

60 – 90 minutes

At a refit, your system is taken off, your scalp is cleaned and prepared again, and the system is cleaned, checked and attached again. A fresh cut keeps the blend looking neat as your own hair keeps growing, so the hairline always looks sharp.

How often will I need a refit?

Most clients come back every 4 to 6 weeks. The exact time depends on your attachment method, your skin and how active you are. A man who trains most days and swims will usually need to come in sooner than a man with a quieter routine.

We set up your refit plan at your first fitting, so there is always a booking in the diary and the system never has the chance to start lifting at the edges. You can read more about this on our hair system maintenance page.

4–6

weeks between refits for most clients

Tape vs liquid bond

There are two main ways to attach a hair system, and neither one is best for everyone. The right choice depends on your skin, how active you are and how often you are happy to visit the studio. If you want to compare them in more detail, our guide to tape vs glue goes through the good and bad points of each.

Most common

Tape Attachment

Strips of double sided tape are placed around the edge of the system. Tape is quick to apply, easy to remove and simple to live with, which makes it a good first choice if you are new to hair systems and want an easy routine between visits.

Advantages

Things to Consider

Longest hold

Glue Attachment

A skin safe liquid glue is applied along the base of the system. It gives the strongest and longest lasting hold, which is why men who swim, play sport or want the least daily worry usually choose it.

Advantages

Things to Consider

Cannot decide? We will recommend the best method for your skin type and your lifestyle at your consultation, so you do not have to guess.

Aftercare Following Your Hair System Fitting

Once you leave the studio, your hair system becomes part of your daily routine. Looking after it is simple, and it gets easier after the first week. Here is how the first days, weeks and months usually go, and what to do at each stage to keep your system looking its best.

  1. First 24 Hours

    Take It Easy

    • Do not wash your hair or sweat heavily while the bond settles
    • Try not to press the edge of the system against a pillow when you sleep
    • Be gentle with it, because the bond is still setting
  2. First Week

    Settling In

    • Wash 2 to 3 times a week with a sulphate free shampoo, and pat the hairline dry instead of rubbing it
    • Many men feel mild itching while the scalp gets used to the system, and it usually settles quickly
    • If the itching does not settle, tell us, or read about why a hair system itches
  3. Everyday Life

    Full Freedom

    • Once the bond has settled, you can shower with a hair system and sleep in it as normal
    • Rinse the hairline with fresh water after swimming or a hard workout
    • Blow dry on a low heat, because high heat can damage the hair
  4. Every 4 to 6 Weeks

    Refit Time

    • Book your refit before the edges start to lift, not after
    • The system is taken off, cleaned and attached again
    • A quick trim keeps the blend looking fresh and neat
Wind and weather resistant
Sleep comfortably
Wash and style normally

Why Choose The Hair Standard for Your Hair System Fitting in London

5+ Years of Specialist Experience

Hair Systems Are What We Do

Custom-Matched Every Time

Colour, thickness, wave pattern and hairline are matched to you. Nothing is picked off a shelf, so the result looks like your own hair and not like a hairpiece.

Same-Day Walk-Out Results

The consultation, colour matching, fitting and styling all happen in one visit, and same day fitting is available for suitable systems. You leave the studio with a finished look.

Ongoing Support

The same named specialist looks after you from your first fitting to every refit. Your fit and colour match stay the same over time, and you always know who you are seeing.

Discretion First

Appointments are private, with no shared waiting area and no walk-ins. Packaging and letters arrive with no visible branding, so your hair system stays your business.

Your questions answered

Hair System Fitting FAQs

Does a hair system fitting hurt?

No. The system is attached to the surface of your scalp with tape or a skin safe glue, and nothing goes under the skin. There is no surgery, no cutting of the scalp and no recovery time, so you can carry on with your day as normal.

How much does a hair system fitting cost in London?

A first hair system fitting starts from £495. That includes the consultation, the system, the fitting, cutting, blending and styling. The exact price depends on the base type and how much thickness you need, and you will be told the full price at your consultation. Maintenance visits are £100 each.

How long does a hair system fitting take?

A first fitting usually takes 2 to 3 hours, from the consultation to the final cut and styling. Refit appointments are shorter, at 60 to 90 minutes, because the system is already made and only needs to be cleaned and attached again.

Can I swim and exercise after a fitting?

Yes, once the bond has settled. A liquid bond holds up best for swimming and sport. After swimming or a hard workout, rinse the hairline with fresh water to keep the hair and the base in good condition.

How often will I need a refit?

Most men come back every 4 to 6 weeks. How often depends on your attachment method, your skin and how active you are. We set your refit plan at your first fitting, so your next visit is always booked.

What is the difference between a hair system and a wig?

A wig sits on top of your head and comes off every day. A hair system is attached to your scalp and worn all the time between maintenance visits. It has a very thin base that is made to look natural, so it looks like your own hair and not like something sitting on your head.

Can I get a hair system fitting on the same day as my consultation?

Often, yes. Same day fitting is available for suitable systems. The studio works by appointment, and one specialist looks after each fitting, so you get their full attention from start to finish.

Where can I get a hair system fitting in London?

You can get a hair system fitting at The Hair Standard, our private studio in NW10, a short walk from Willesden Junction and close to Kensal Green. Men come to us from Brent, Willesden, Harrow and across West and North West London. Every visit is by appointment, with one named specialist.

What should I do to prepare for a hair system fitting?

There is very little to do. Come with your hair at its normal length, so your specialist can see how it grows and where it is thinning. Bring a photo or two of hairstyles you like, and tell us if you train, swim or wear a hat every day. Eat something first, because a first fitting can take 2 to 3 hours.

Do I need a consultation before my hair system fitting?

Yes, and it is free. The consultation is where we look at your hair loss, talk about the base and the attachment method, and answer your questions. There is no pressure to book. If a hair system is not the right choice for you, we will tell you honestly.

Will people notice I am wearing a hair system?

A well fitted and well looked after system is hard to spot in everyday life. The natural hairline, the colour match and the hand cut blend do most of the work. Regular refits keep it looking that way, because the system stays fresh and the cut stays neat as your own hair grows.

Can I keep my own hair around the system?

Yes. Many men keep the hair they have at the sides and back, and the system is cut in together with it so the two blend. If your own hair is very thin, your specialist will talk you through the best way to blend it at your consultation.

Which is better for a hair system, tape or liquid bond?

Neither is best for everyone. Tape is quick to apply, easy to remove and good if you are new to hair systems. Liquid bond gives the strongest and longest lasting hold, so it suits men who swim or play sport. We recommend the right one for your skin and your routine at your consultation.

What if my skin reacts to the tape or glue?

Tell your specialist as early as you can, ideally at your consultation. Skin that reacts easily to adhesives is common, and there are options, such as a different attachment method or a different base. It is much easier to plan for this before the fitting than to deal with it a week later.

Is a hair system fitting right for a receding hairline, crown thinning or baldness?

Yes, a hair system can work at most stages of hair loss. It can rebuild a receding hairline, add thickness to a thinning crown, or cover advanced hair loss, because it does not need your own hair to work. It covers hair loss and does not treat the cause, so if your hair loss is sudden or patchy, see your GP first.
