Hair System for Alopecia in London

Alopecia can take hair in patches or all at once, and a hair system covers it without surgery or a long wait. It is bonded to your scalp, matched to your colour and, if you still have some hair, cut in with it. At The Hair Standard, our private men’s studio in NW10, north west London, a hair system for alopecia starts from £495, with the fitting, cut and styling included, and the first consultation is free.

Signs of Alopecia in Men

Alopecia does not always look like the thinning most men expect. Alopecia areata usually shows up as a smooth, round bare patch, often about the size of a coin, on the scalp or in the beard. It can appear within days. Some men then get more patches that join up, and a few lose all the hair on the scalp.

It often arrives with no warning, which is part of what makes it hard. Patches can grow back and then fall out again, so a man can spend years not knowing what his hair will do next.

Other signs depend on the type. Traction alopecia shows as thinning along the hairline and temples after years of tight styles. Scarring types can leave smooth, shiny skin where the hair used to grow, and they need a doctor’s attention.

If you have found a bare patch, sudden shedding or a sore scalp, see your GP or a dermatologist first. A hair system covers the loss. It does not diagnose it.

Types of Alopecia in Men

Alopecia is a general word for hair loss, and several different conditions sit under it. They look different and they behave differently, so it helps to know which one you are dealing with.

01

Alopecia Areata

An autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing round bare patches. It can come and go. Our post on alopecia areata vs male pattern baldness explains how to tell it apart.

02

Alopecia Totalis and Universalis

Totalis means the loss of all the hair on the scalp, and universalis means loss of hair across the whole body. There is more on living with alopecia totalis and hair systems.

03

Traction Alopecia

Hair loss from years of pulling, such as tight braids, cornrows or locs. It hits the hairline and temples first. We cover whether a hair system can help with traction alopecia.

04

Scarring Alopecia

Conditions that damage the follicle itself and cause permanent loss. They can cause pain, redness or itching, and they need a doctor to diagnose and treat them.

05

Male Pattern Hair Loss

Also called androgenetic alopecia, and the most common type in men. It is driven by genes and hormones, and it follows a pattern of receding temples and a thinning crown.

If you are not sure which type you have, speak to your GP or a dermatologist. Some types can be treated, and a hair system covers the result whichever one it is.

How a hair system helps

How a Hair System Covers Alopecia

A hair system does not care why the hair is missing. It sits over the scalp, covers the patches or the whole top, and it is made to match whatever hair you have left. With patchy alopecia the system blends into the hair around the bare areas. With total hair loss it is a complete head of hair that stands on its own.

It covers alopecia and does not treat it. Treatment is something to talk through with your GP or a dermatologist.

Design for this hair loss

Hair System Designs for Alopecia Patches, Thinning and Total Loss

Alopecia can leave one patch or none of your hair, and the design follows what you have. At the consultation we look at where the patches are, how much hair is around them and how your scalp feels, then plan the base, the thickness and the hairline.

01

A Few Small Patches

Most of your hair is still there, with bare patches in it. A system matched to the hair around the patches covers them and is cut in with your own hair at the edges, so the join is hard to find.

02

Patches Joining Up

The bare areas have spread and merged into large gaps. We cover the whole top, so there is no hair left to stand out against, and match the thickness to the hair at the sides.

03

Thinning All Over

Some men lose hair evenly across the scalp rather than in patches. The system adds thickness across the top and blends into the thinner hair at the sides.

04

Total Hair Loss

All the hair on the scalp has gone. A full system gives you a complete head of hair, with the hairline, colour and length planned with you from the start.

What Is Different

What Is Different About a Hair System for Alopecia

Hair loss from alopecia is not the same job as steady male pattern thinning. Three things need extra care.

01

The Hair Loss Can Change

Alopecia areata is unpredictable. New patches can appear and old ones can fill in. Your specialist designs around the hair you have now and talks through any changes at your maintenance visits.

02

A Sensitive or Patchy Scalp

Some scalps with alopecia are dry, sore or sensitive. Tell your specialist about any irritation so the bond is chosen with care, and see your GP if the skin looks inflamed. There is more in our guide to a hair replacement system for a sensitive scalp.

03

If Your Hair Grows Back

Alopecia areata can regrow, and a hair system does not stop that. If your own hair comes back, the system can come off at any time. Nothing is cut, injected or implanted.

The process

How We Fit a Hair System for Alopecia

Three steps, one private room.

01

Free Consultation

You meet your specialist in private at our NW10 studio. They look at the patches, the hair around them and how your scalp is, and ask what you want to look like. They talk through the base, the bond and the cost, and if a hair system is not the right step yet, you are told.

02

Match the Hair and Fit the System

The colour, thickness and wave are matched to the hair you have, and the hairline is planned with you. The system is bonded to your scalp and your own hair is cut in around it. Suitable systems can be fitted on the same day, as explained on the hair system fitting page.

03

Leave With Full Coverage

You walk out wearing the finished look. You are shown how to wash, dry and style the system, and your visits are booked, usually every 4 to 6 weeks.

Maintenance

Hair System Maintenance for Alopecia

Every 4 to 6 weeks you are back at the NW10 studio. The system comes off, it and your scalp are cleaned, fresh bond goes on and the blend is tidied. Because alopecia can change, the visit is also a chance to look at how your own hair and scalp are doing and to adjust the blend if patches have moved. Each maintenance visit is £100, or included in the package, and the guide on how to maintain a hair replacement system covers the routine at home.

Alopecia Hair System FAQs

Can a hair system cover alopecia areata?

Yes. The system covers the bare patches and is matched to the hair around them, so it blends in. You see the result on the day, with no surgery. It does not treat the alopecia, and your own hair may still change underneath.

It does. With total hair loss on the scalp, a full system gives you a complete head of hair. It covers the scalp only, so it does not replace eyebrows or body hair.

No. A hair system is not a treatment, and it will not bring your hair back or stop it falling out. Tell your specialist about any scalp irritation, and if your skin is sore or inflamed, see your GP before a fitting.

The system can come off at any time, because it is bonded on and nothing is cut or implanted. Many men with alopecia areata see regrowth that may or may not last, so your specialist will talk through how your hair has behaved and what makes sense.

It can. The colour, thickness and wave are matched to the hair you have, and your own hair is cut in around the edges so there is no line where the system starts. Whether people can tell comes down to the hairline, the match and the cut.

A wig sits on top and comes off at night. A hair system is bonded to your scalp and stays on between visits, so there is nothing to put on each morning. Our post on hair system vs wig for men goes through the difference.

The first system is from £495, with the fitting, cut and styling included. Maintenance is £100 a visit, and the Confidence Maintained package is £1,495. The final cost depends on the base, the thickness and the area covered, and you get it at the free consultation.

At The Hair Standard, a private men’s studio on Harrow Road in NW10, near Willesden Junction. The Bakerloo line and London Overground both stop there, which links the studio to the rest of London. The studio is open Monday to Friday 9am to 6:30pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm, and closed on Sundays.

About 3 to 8 months, depending on the base, your skin and how active you are. Our post on how long hair replacement systems last gives the figures for each base.

It can cover the thinned hairline and temples. If tight styles caused the hair loss, easing the tension matters too, and a GP or dermatologist should check any scarring or soreness. More in our post on traction alopecia and hair systems.

You do not need a referral to book. If your hair loss is new, sudden or patchy, though, see your GP or a dermatologist first to find the cause, because some types can be treated. A hair system does not replace that check.

Yes, and it is private. Bring your questions about the type of alopecia you have, the bond, the cost and the upkeep. There is no obligation to go ahead.
