Afro Textured Hair Systems for Men in London
An afro textured hair system, also called an afro hair system or an afro hair replacement system, matches the coils and curls of your own hair, so the new hair looks like yours and not like something borrowed. It bonds to your scalp, needs no surgery, and can be cut, faded and lined up the way you like it. At The Hair Standard, our private men’s studio in NW10, north west London, an afro textured hair system starts from £495, with the fitting, cut and styling included. The first consultation is free.
Is this you?
Signs of Hair Loss in Men With Afro Textured Hair
Hair loss affects Black men as much as any other group, but tight coils are good at hiding thinning. The curls stack and spring up, so a hairline can move back or a crown can thin for a long time before the mirror shows it. Often the barber sees it first, when the lineup no longer sits where it used to or a fade stops hiding a thin patch.
At the front, the signs are a hairline that has crept back at the temples, or edges that look sparse and uneven. At the crown, it shows when you cut your hair low and the scalp comes through. Afro textured hair also breaks more easily than it sheds, so some men notice short, broken hairs along the front before they notice bald skin.
You may find that the styles you used to wear, a taper, a crop, twists, no longer sit the way they did.
If this sounds familiar, the free consultation is a quiet place to ask what a hair system can do for your hair type.
What Causes Hair Loss in Men With Afro Textured Hair?
Male pattern hair loss affects men of every background, and it is behind a lot of receding hairlines and thin crowns in men with afro textured hair too. It runs in families, and the hormone DHT shrinks the follicles at the temples and crown over the years.
Tension is the other big one. Tight braids, cornrows, twists, locs and weaves that pull on the hairline for years can cause traction alopecia, which often shows first at the edges and temples. Our guide on whether a hair system can help with traction alopecia goes through it. Harsh chemical treatments and a lot of heat can also weaken hair until it snaps.
Scalp problems, illness and some medicines can make hair shed as well. If you have patches, scarring, bumps or soreness, see your GP or a dermatologist before anything else, because some types of hair loss need treating.
How a hair system helps
How an Afro Textured Hair System Works
With an afro hair replacement system, matching the texture is the whole job. A straight or wavy system next to tight coils shows at the join however good the hairline is. So the curl pattern, the thickness, the colour and the way the hair holds its shape are matched to your own hair, and your own hair is cut in with the system by hand. The same rule applies to hair systems for Black men and for any man with afro textured hair: the closer the match, the less the join shows.
The system is bonded to your scalp, so there is no surgery and nothing to heal. It covers the hair you have lost and leaves the hair underneath alone. More on how the curl side works is in our guide to hair replacement systems for curly hair.

Afro Textured Hair System Styles and Cuts
Your hair system can be cut the way your own hair is cut. At the consultation we talk through what you wear now, what you used to wear and what you want, then plan the hairline, the length and the finish around it.
01
Fresh Fade With Short Curls
A close fade at the sides and back, with short curls kept on top. The fade is blended into your own hair at the edges, so there is no step where the system starts.
02
Sharp Lineup, Natural Top
A clean, shaped front edge with the curls left natural above it. It suits men who keep a regular lineup and want the hairline back after it has moved.
03
Longer Curls on Top
More length and body, with the curls matched to yours in pattern and thickness. The sides are cut shorter to keep the shape tidy.
04
Covering a Thin Crown or Temples
Only part of the head has thinned, and the rest of your own hair stays. The system is made to cover the thin area and blend into the hair around it.
What Is Different
What Makes an Afro Textured Hair System Different
Hair systems for afro textured hair are not just a darker version of a standard one. Three things need extra attention.
01
The Curl Pattern
Coils shrink and spring in a way straight hair does not. The pattern is matched as closely as possible, so it moves, sits and dries like your own hair.
02
The Lineup and the Edges
Many men with afro textured hair keep a sharp shape up at the front. The system's front edge is cut and shaped to take the same lineup, and your own hair around it is cut in to match.
03
Skin Tone and Scalp Care
The base is chosen to suit your scalp tone, so it does not show through as a lighter patch. Coily hair also tends to dry out, so your specialist shows you how to clean and moisturise it without loosening the bond.
The process
How We Fit an Afro Textured Hair System
Three steps, one private room.
01
Free Consultation
You sit down with one specialist, privately, at our NW10 studio. They look at your hair, your curl pattern and where the hair loss is, then ask how you like to wear it. The base, the bond and the cost are explained, and if a hair system is not right for you, you are told.
02
Match the Curls and Fit the System
The curl pattern, colour and thickness are matched, the hairline is shaped with you, and the system is bonded to your scalp. Your own hair is cut in around it, with any fade or lineup done at the same visit. Same day hair system fitting is available for suitable systems.
03
Leave With Your Own Look Back
You walk out wearing the finished look, and you are shown how to wash, moisturise and style it. Your next visits are booked, usually every 4 to 6 weeks.

Afro Textured Hair System FAQs
Can you make a hair system for afro textured hair?
Yes. We offer afro textured hair systems for men, matched to your curl pattern, thickness and colour. Bring photos of your hair if you have them, since they help your specialist choose.
Are hair systems suitable for Black men?
Yes. Hair systems for Black men are matched to afro textured hair, so the curl pattern, thickness, colour and lineup follow your own hair, and the base follows your scalp tone. Hair loss is common in Black men, from male pattern loss to traction alopecia, and a system can cover both. Your specialist plans the look with you at the consultation.
Is an afro hair replacement system the same as a wig?
No. A wig sits on top of your head and comes off at night. An afro hair replacement system is bonded to your scalp and stays on between maintenance visits, so you can shower and sleep in it once the bond has settled. Our post on hair system vs wig for men explains the difference in detail.
Will the curl pattern match my own hair?
That is the main job of the fitting, and the aim is a close match, so the system moves and sits like your own hair. Your specialist checks it against your hair in daylight before the system is bonded on.
Can I have a fade and a sharp lineup with a hair system?
Usually, yes. The system is cut at the fitting, the front edge can be shaped to take a lineup, and the sides of your own hair can be faded into it. Say what you wear now and your specialist plans around it.
Can a hair system cover a hairline thinned by traction alopecia?
It can cover the thinned area at the edges and temples. If the hair loss came from tight styles, easing the tension matters too, and it is worth speaking to your GP or a dermatologist if there is scarring or soreness. Our post on traction alopecia and hair systems has more.
Will the base match my skin tone?
The base is chosen to suit your scalp tone, and the hair colour to match your natural shade, so nothing shows through as a lighter patch. Your specialist checks both at the consultation.
How do I look after coily hair with a hair system?
Keep the system and your scalp clean, and keep the hair moisturised so it does not dry out and frizz. Your specialist shows you how to wash it and which products to use, so the bond is not loosened.
Will people be able to tell I am wearing a hair system?
A well matched and well kept system is hard to spot in everyday life. Whether people can tell depends mostly on the hairline, the curl match and the cut. It will not be invisible up close, and you see the finished look before you leave.
How much does an afro textured hair system cost in London?
From £495 for the first system, including fitting, cut and styling. Each visit after that is £100, and the yearly package is £1,495. The exact total depends on the base, thickness and curl pattern, and you get it at the free consultation.
Where can I get an afro textured hair system in London?
The Hair Standard is a private men’s studio in NW10, on Harrow Road, near Willesden Junction. It is a short trip from Harlesden, Kensal Green and Willesden, and the Tube or Overground connect it to the rest of London. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 6:30pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm, with the studio closed on Sundays.
How often do I need maintenance on a hair system?
Most men return every 4 to 6 weeks for a refit and a fresh lineup. Skin, routine and activity all change the timing, and the schedule is agreed at the first fitting.
Is the consultation for an afro textured hair system free?
Yes, and it is private. Bring any questions about the curl match, the lineup, the cost or the upkeep. Nobody has to book afterwards.
